The Best Free Outdoor Family Photo Locations Near Camberley (That Your Kids Will Actually Enjoy)
When you are planning a family photoshoot, picking the right location is very important. If you have young children, the ideal spot needs to be somewhere they can explore safely, move freely, and just be themselves.
As a Surrey family photographer specialising in documentary-style sessions, I always look for open spaces where the light is beautiful, entry is free, and parking is stress-free. Our local wide-open parks, ancient woodlands, and quiet riverside trails allow for the most joyful family dynamics to unfold—without costing a thing.
Best of all, every single one of these locations features a fantastic, fully equipped playground. This means your little ones will be rewarded with some swing time, making the entire outing feel like a fun family day out rather than a chore.
If you are looking for the perfect spot for your next family adventure (or your next photoshoot) —here are three of the absolute best, entirely free outdoor locations right on the borders of Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire.
Frimley Lodge Park, Surrey
Frimley Lodge Park is a beautifully diverse, award-winning green space right on our doorstep that offers a little bit of everything. Best of all, both entry and parking are completely free. With its expansive open lawns, wooded areas, and lovely path tracking alongside the Basingstoke Canal, it is a local treasure for family outings.
Why kids love it: There is an endless sense of adventure here. Whether they are watching the miniature railway trains, exploring the secret woodland trails, or pointing at ducks along the canal, children are naturally entertained without any pressure to look at a lens.
Why photographers love it: The mix of wide fields and mature tree lines gives us the best of both worlds. We can use the deeper tree lines to find beautiful, soft-filtered shade during brighter parts of the day, and move out to the open fields for gorgeous, glowing light later in the day.
Lightwater Country Park, Surrey
Sitting right on the edge of the heathland, Lightwater Country Park offers a wonderfully wild, texture-rich backdrops with free parking. A mixture of quiet ponds, walking trails, and sweeping gorse and heather, makes you feel like you’ve reached a true escape into nature.
Why kids love it: It feels like a real expedition. Toddlers and young children love running around woods and feeding the ducks by the ponds. It’s the perfect environment for capturing active, curious play. What is more, your little ones will get a chance to run into four legged friends (my toddler is currently obsessed with watching dogs).
Why photographers love it: The rich textures of the heathland and the reflective qualities of the ponds do beautiful things to natural light. The soft greens, earthy browns, and general seasonal changes provide a stunning colour palette that perfectly complements the documentary-style pictures we will take,
Shepherd Meadows & Sandhurst Memorial Park, Berkshire Border
Sitting just on the edge of Camberley, this linked site is an absolute hidden gem that offers completely free entry and parking. Shepherd Meadows features stunning, wild water meadows tracking alongside the River Blackwater, which seamlessly connects to the beautifully open Sandhurst Memorial Park.
Why kids love it: It’s a paradise for little nature lovers. From spotting wildlife along the riverbanks to walking through the tall summer grasses, it feels incredibly wild and adventurous. There is plenty of space for toddlers to toddle safely down the flat, gravel paths too.
Why photographers love it: The wild, overgrown aesthetic of Shepherd Meadows is a documentary photographer’s dream. The tall grasses filter the sunlight beautifully, creating an incredibly soft, luminous, and romantic backdrop for candid family moments.
The beauty of living where Surrey, Hampshire, and Berkshire meet is that we are absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to stunning, free natural backdrops. Whichever location you choose, the goal is always the same: to capture your sincere family dynamics.
